Class 8 surface area and volume, as pictures to move
How much a solid holds, and how much it takes to wrap it. Here is what Class 8 practises in surface area and volume, and the games that do it.
Skills in Class 8 surface area and volume
- Surface area and volume of a box and a tin
- Cones, spheres and hemispheres
- Double the sides: what happens to area and volume
- Volume of a prism: base times height
- Same volume, different wrapping
- A painted cube, cut up
- Litres and cubic centimetres
- Faces, edges and corners
- Unfold a box to find its surface area
- Surface area and volume of combined solids
The games
Played as fill in the steps, place the tiles, predict, then slide.
- Inside and outside a box
- Inside and outside a tin
- Unroll the tin
- Make the paint four times as much
- Double every side: length, surface, volume
- A cylinder stacked from discs
- Make the cube hold eight times as much
- Discs with no area given
- Pour small cubes into a double-size cube
- Triple every side
- Find the slice, then stack it
- A wide cylinder from its radius
- Nine times the surface
- Same cubes, many boxes: find the best
- Trapezium slice, found by you
- A painted cube cut into 125
- Triple every side: how much water
- Length of a triangular prism from its volume
- Big tanks, many litres
- Capacity of a large tank
- Prisms up to a hexagon
- Paper to cover a large box
- Painted on top and sides, not the base
- Length of a trapezium prism from its volume
- A large box from its net alone
- Pour a wide pot into small cups
- Melt a block into small blocks: times as much
- A wider, taller pot into small cups
- Three times as wide: how many cups
- Melt a sphere into small spheres: times as much
Volume is how many unit cubes fill it
Fill a box layer by layer. One layer holds length times breadth cubes, and there are as many layers as the height. Volume is measured in cubic units, like cm³.
