Fractions, explained with pictures

Numbers for the pieces of a whole, not just for whole things.

In everyday life: Half a roti, a quarter of an hour, one third of a chocolate bar shared three ways.

The parts have to be EQUAL

Cutting a roti into two pieces does not make halves unless both pieces are the same size. A fraction only means something when the whole is split evenly.

Two equal halves, one shaded

The bottom number says how many pieces the whole was cut into

In 3/4, the 4 says the whole was cut into four equal parts, and the 3 says you have three of them. A bigger bottom number means SMALLER pieces — 1/8 is less than 1/4.

1/4 — bigger pieces
1/8 — smaller pieces

Different fractions can be the same amount

1/2, 2/4 and 4/8 all cover the same part of the whole. You cut more times, but each piece is smaller, so it evens out. These are equivalent fractions.

1/2
2/4
4/8

A worked example

Which is bigger, 1/3 or 1/5?

1/3
1/5

1/3

Both are one piece. But cutting something into 3 gives bigger pieces than cutting it into 5. Fewer cuts, bigger piece.
