Numbers, explained with pictures

How numbers are built, and what happens when you put them together.

In everyday life: Counting rupees, sharing sweets between friends, reading the number on a bus.

Where a digit sits changes what it is worth

In 482, the 4 is not four. It is four hundreds. Same digit, different place, different value. This one idea runs through everything you do with big numbers.

482: 4 hundreds, 8 tens, 2 ones

Multiplying is counting equal groups

6 x 4 is six groups with four in each. You could count them one by one and get the same answer. Multiplying is just the fast way.

Six rows of four

Numbers can be broken into parts

12 is 3 x 4, and also 2 x 6. Those parts are called factors. Some numbers, like 7, can only be broken into 1 x 7 — those are the prime numbers.

3 x 4 = 12
2 x 6 = 12

A worked example

What is the 7 worth in 3,704?

3,704 pulled apart

700

Reading from the right: 4 ones, 0 tens, 7 hundreds, 3 thousands. The 7 sits in the hundreds place, so it is worth 7 hundreds.
